# Newcastle United: Joelinton’s second FA Cup goal against Oxford has supporters drooling over record signing

**After fending off a threatening comeback from League One minnows Oxford United, Newcastle eventually clinched their spot in the FA Cup [fifth round](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51271468) for the first time since Mike Ashley’s takeover back in 2007 – with under-fire striker Joelinton playing a crucial role before having to come off with an injury.**

The Brazilian, who has been [under pressure](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/match-day-verdict-joelinton-criticised-17514254) from supporters and pundits alike recently, found the net for Newcastle’s second of the game – feeding off Sean Longstaff’s ball over the top to calmly slot it into the bottom corner. Joelinton, prior to his strike, also fed Longstaff for the game’s opener – thereby nearly equalling his entire Premier League tally of goals and assists so far in just 37 minutes ([WhoScored.com](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/201755/Show/Joelinton)). However, due to a suspected rib injury, the record [£40 million signing](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49039959) had to be taken off before half time – with manager Steve Bruce hoping he hasn’t ‘cracked or damaged a rib’ ([Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/steve-bruce-reveals-joelinton-fear-after-fa-cup-injury-1385280)).

Regardless of his eventual substitution, Newcastle fans took to Twitter and hailed the striker for his second FA Cup goal so far this season – with the other coming against Rochdale in the third round. One supporter even jokingly claimed he is ‘[better than Messi](https://twitter.com/brandon96325727/status/1224793893604089856?s=21)‘ – referring to the Barcelona legend.
