Newcastle: Pete O’Rourke drops Armando Broja claim

Newcastle: Pete O’Rourke drops Armando Broja claim -Newcastle United News

Newcastle United could decide to challenge West Ham in the pursuit of Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer, journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed.

The Lowdown: Broja linked with Newcastle

According to a previous report by Sky Sports, the Hammers were set to bid £30m for the 20-year-old.

Elsewhere, JOE have reported that Chelsea offered the Albania international to Everton as part of a last-minute offer for Richarlison, which was swiftly rejected by the Toffees before the Brazilian sealed a move to Tottenham.

With Newcastle previously being linked with a move for Reims forward Hugo Ekitike, the Magpies have had to look elsewhere for a new attacking target, with the Daily Mail reporting that Broja has been identified as a solid alternative.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s claim on Broja

O’Rourke has weighed in on Broja’s transfer situation, claiming that he could see him high up on Eddie Howe’s wish list at Newcastle.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist said: “I’m sure Broja does figure on Newcastle’s wish-list if they are to bring in a new striker because you don’t get too many good young players who might be available this summer, and Broja fits that bill.

“I’m sure Newcastle might be thinking maybe we should be coming in to compete with West Ham for his signature.”

The Verdict: Strong alternative to Ekitke

With 33 Premier League appearances and six top-flight goals to his name, Broja could prove to be a solid attacking option for the Magpies, given his strong presence and aerial threat in the penalty area.

The former Southampton loanee was praised heavily by Saints legend Francis Benali during his tenure at St Mary’s, with the youngster dubbed ‘sensational’ by the 53-year-old since breaking into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team.

Whilst Ekitike’s ten Ligue 1 goals are impressive as a 20-year-old, Broja is a tried-and-tested Premier League striker, making him an ideal target for Newcastle to pursue.
