Transfer expert Dean Jones has shared that Newcastle United have been 'offered' the chance to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram.

The Lowdown: World Cup appearance

Thuram made his first appearance, albeit a very brief one, for France at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as he came on as a late substitute for Olivier Giroud in their 4-1 win over Australia in their opening group game.

He plays his trade for Gladbach in Germany, but his current deal runs out in the summer, meaning that the Bundesliga side risk him leaving as a free agent.

The Latest: Newcastle 'offered' Thuram

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has shared that the St. James' Park outfit have been 'offered' the chance to sign Thuram in the January transfer window for a cut-price:

“Thuram has been offered to Newcastle for the next window. He’s somebody that they are willing to consider. They see that he holds good value at the price that’s been put to them.”

The Verdict: Get it done

If the opportunity arises to sign a player of Thuram's quality for a cut-price, then the North East club must take it.

Lauded as ‘world class‘ by Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer, he ranks in the top 5% for non-penalty xG, top 8% for dribbles completed and top 10% for shots and interceptions of all strikers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year (FBRef).

Thuram managed an impressive 13 goals and four assists in his opening 17 matches for Gladbach in all competitions in the first part of the season (Transfermarkt), averaging a goal contribution a game.

The 25-year-old shares a playing style similar to club-record signing Alexander Isak, and with Callum Wilson an option up top as well, the Magpies would have a set of striking options that could fire them into the UEFA Champions League for next term.
