Former Premier League striker now talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Newcastle United to sign Leandro Trossard in January.

The Lowdown: Ashworth target

As per 90min, sporting director Dan Ashworth wants to take Trossard from his old club Brighton and Hove Albion.

The report states that his contract is set to run out in 2024, and could be available for a cut-price deal, with Chelsea manager Graham Potter also interested in raiding his former club.

The Latest: Perfect signing?

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor has claimed that Trossard would 'fit in perfectly' at St. James' Park, and even claimed that he could help them finish in the top-four:

“Yes, I do, I think he definitely is.

“He plays for Belgium as well, his national team, which is a talented team.

“I think Trossard would fit in nicely on that left wing. Saint-Maximin is a very good player, but he’s injured a lot. Joelinton played there at the weekend.

“When you are fighting for top-four, you need two players in each position, fighting for each position.

“I think he would fit in perfectly there. If I was Newcastle, I’d look to get that done in January.

“You know Brighton are a selling club, so if you pay the right money for him, they will sell.

“He’d fit in perfectly into that team and is the sort of player who would help them push into the top-four.”

The Verdict: No-brainer

To get a player of Trossard's quality for a cut-price is surely a no-brainer for the Tynesiders, providing that they can get a deal done in January.

Boasting six goals and two assists in the Premier League in 11 games in total so far this season, including a hat-trick at Anfield and one at Manchester City last weekend (Transfermarkt), the winger has already proven himself in the division, and has also established himself as a key member of the Belgium squad.

Trossard has five goals and three assists in 21 senior caps for his country (Transfermarkt), and is set to star at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

His goal at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon was his 100th at club level, and added to the five that he has for Belgium, Trossard now has 105 senior goals to his name.

At 27 years of age, he is a player in his prime, and the Magpies could do far worse than snapping him up in a cut-price deal.
