Newcastle United: Callum Wilson scoring statistic emerges amid England snub

Newcastle United: Callum Wilson scoring statistic emerges amid England snub - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has outlined his value for the Magpies in the early stages of the campaign by registering 67% of their goals so far this campaign, as per Chronicle Live.

Steve Bruce had been searching for a striker who could come in and start to improve the Magpies’ record in front of goal. Last season it was hoped that Joelinton would be that player after his club-record £40m arrival from Hoffenheim. However, he registered only two goals and averaged just a single shot per match in his debut Premier League season (via Sofascore).

Callum Wilson’s impact is clear to see

Newcastle made the decision to move for Wilson this summer to try and solve their goalscoring issues, with the England international arriving from Bournemouth for £20m. The 28-year-old has already gone some way to repaying that fee by netting four goals in his first four league matches.

The striker has been instrumental in helping the Magpies pick up seven points from their opening four league matches, with Wilson contributing 67% of their goals so far this campaign. That is the largest net contribution of any player in the division in terms of number of goals scored, as per Chronicle Live.

However, the striker’s impressive form was still not enough to earn him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for England’s October internationals.

Newcastle must build attack around Wilson and Saint-Maximin

In Newcastle’s last game before the international break, Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin showed their potential to blossom into a very exciting attacking partnership for the Magpies. The 28-year-old assisted the winger for the opening goal of the game before the favour was returned for the first of the striker’s two goals in the win over Burnley.

With goals having been hard to come by for Newcastle last term – their 38-goal tally was the fourth-lowest in the league – Wilson is already shouldering a lot of the responsibility. However, if Saint-Maximin can continue to provide the service, then the 28-year-old striker should continue to fire, especially considering he is more of a natural finisher than Joelinton, having scored eight goals from an average of 1.3 shots per game last season (via Sofascore).
