The Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has revealed some Newcastle United transfer news on their search for a new striker and other potential signings.

The Lowdown: Striker wanted

Given recent links to the likes of PSG's Mauro Icardi and Watford's Joao Pedro, it is clear that the St. James' Park outfit want to bring in a new striker before the transfer window ends.

Unfortunately, Callum Wilson is susceptible to injuries, while Chris Wood has only managed to find the back of the net twice since arriving from Burnley in the January window, so Eddie Howe would like to have another option up top for the rest of the season.

The Latest: Nothing close

Taking to Twitter on Thursday morning, Edwards has revealed that although Chelsea's Armando Broja and Benfica's Goncalo Ramos are also possibilities to solve the striker search, 'nothing is close' in terms of bringing in a striker or any other potential signings:

"Broja remains a possibility but if he leaves he wants to be first choice striker and he wouldn’t be that behind Wilson at SJP. #nufc like Ramos at Benfica but have not made any sort of official move for him as things stand. Told last night nothing is close incoming wise."

The Verdict: Worrying

It will certainly be worrying for some members of the Toon Army to hear of a lack of progression in terms of potential arrivals in the North East.

With only around two weeks of the window left, the Tynesiders will not want to become desperate and pay over the odds to fill the gaps in their squad.

Howe and his team will remain patient as the days tick by, with the priority being to get the best possible players for the manager's system, but the closer we get to September 1 the more fans will worry.
