Former Newcastle United star Keith Gillespie has told The Transfer Tavern that the club must not sell Jacob Murphy for a reduced fee this summer.

A report from Football Insider earlier this week claimed that the winger could be set to leave the club this summer.

Scottish giants Rangers and Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Southampton are both said to be interested in a deal to bring Murphy in and they report that he would cost £3m.

The website has previously reported that Murphy has a contract until 2022, not 2021, despite contradictory reports.

And that means that he could go for a lower fee than expected as the summer window nears.

Murphy has made 19 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring twice and laying on two assists, including a strike in the 2-1 win over Burnley.

And Gillespie thinks he needs to stay at the club, though he is unsurprised by the amount of clubs potentially queuing around the block to snap him up.

He told TT: “So, he's impressed me lately, I must say, and I think he's impressed a lot of Newcastle fans with his performances, but you wouldn't want somebody leaving for 3 million, it’s nothing nowadays.

“I'm sure if he was available, and he was going for three million, there’d be plenty of clubs looking at Jacob Murphy because it’s relatively such a small fee.”
