Newcastle United: Ryan Fraser and Matt Ritchie could leave in January

Newcastle United: Ryan Fraser and Matt Ritchie could leave in January - Newcastle United News

Ryan Fraser could reportedly leave Newcastle United alongside Matt Ritchie in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Lack of minutes

Both Fraser and Ritchie only have a combined nine appearances and 312 minutes of football between them in the Premier League so far this season (WhoScored), and so seem to behind others in the pecking order under Eddie Howe.

With reports that the St. James’ Park outfit will be looking to strengthen again in January, both players could be deemed surplus to requirements going into the window.

The Latest: Attracting interest

As per The Chronicle, Fraser is now ‘attracting interest’ from a number of clubs in the Premier League and Championship ahead of January, while Ritchie’s future is still ‘up in the air’.

The sides interested in Fraser are situated down south, meaning that he could move back to the coast where he was previously with AFC Bournemouth, while Ritchie has taken charge of academy training sessions on Tyneside as he aims to earn his coaching badges before he retires.

The Verdict: Time to go

With January approaching, it is time for both players to leave the North East.

On £45,000-per-week and £42,000-per-week respectively, losing Ritchie and Fraser would save money off of the wage bill, while not really hurting the squad given their lack of minutes.

Hailed as ‘excellent‘ for Scotland by Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Fraser has never really been able to replicate his international form in a Magpies shirt, with a mere three goals and six assists over the last three seasons (Transfermarkt).

Injuries have not helped, but January presents an ideal time to move the winger on.
