Newcastle United: PIF inquire over Arthur Cabral

Newcastle United: PIF inquire over Arthur Cabral - Newcastle United News

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) have reportedly inquired over the potential signing of Arthur Cabral for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Carabao Cup semi-final

After the disappointment of going out to League One Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup over the weekend, Newcastle booked themselves a place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win at home to Leicester City on Tuesday night.

Now, Eddie Howe and the board will be focusing on potentially adding some reinforcements to the squad, as the St. James’ Park outfit also chase a top four finish come the end of the season.

The Latest: Cabral inquiry

As per GOAL, the North East club are one of three teams to have made an inquiry to Fiorentina over Cabral, with both Atletico Madrid and Udinese also thought to be interested in his signature.

A meeting has been held to find out his situation at the Italian side, and the Tynesiders are ‘closely following’ it as they prepare a potential move in January.

Fiorentina have set a price tag of €40m (£35.4m) to release Cabral in this window, with his contract not up until 2026.

The Verdict: Too expensive?

To spend over £35m on one player in the winter window always comes with its risks, and so the Magpies may want to wait until the summer to splash the cash on another striker as they already have Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Chris Wood at the club.

Hailed as a player with a ‘phenomenal eye for goal’ by journalist Andre Oechsner, Cabral has shown that in the past with 83 goals in 191 games in total at club level, but the six-foot-one striker has not been as prolific at his current club Fiorentina, with just seven strikes in 37 matches.

Again, it comes down to whether the Toon want to fork out a large outlay on the Brazilian this month, or wait until the summer to see who else becomes available.
