Newcastle United have been dealt a potential blow in their hopes of signing West Ham United right-back Harrison Ashby.
The Lowdown: Move fell through
It was reported on Transfer Deadline Day that a move to take the 20-year-old to St James’ Park was ‘all but done‘, but that deal fell through later in the evening.
It has also been reported that the Magpies could come in with a new offer in the January transfer window, and that Ashby could still leave the Hammers.
The Latest: New deal?
It is reported that the Magpies’ interest in Ashby could die down, but they still need a replacement at right-back for the injured Emil Krafth, who is out for the season.
The Verdict: Needed
Given the injury to Krafth, a new right-back is definitely needed for Eddie Howe’s squad.
Newcastle will need adequate cover for Kieran Trippier, and Ashby would certainly provide that, as he has already made six senior appearances for the Irons, including in this season’s Europa Conference League play-off first leg at home to Viborg (Transfermarkt).
Should Newcastle sign Ashby?
Hailed as a ‘tremendous’ talent by Scotland under-21s head coach Scot Gemmill, Ashby is still only 20 years of age and would be one for the future if the Toon can acquire him in the winter transfer window.
