Newcastle United: Pete O’Rourke says Maddison and Barnes would ‘really excite the fans’ -Newcastle United News

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has dropped an exciting claim on reported Newcastle United targets James Maddison and Harvey Barnes.

The Lowdown: Double swoop?

It has been widely reported that the St. James’ Park outfit are eyeing a potential double raid of Leicester City for both Maddison and Barnes.

The Foxes need to sell first before they can bring in any new signings, and big-money moves for the pair would certainly help fund any potential future deals.

The Latest: O’Rourke claim

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern when asked if the new owners are looking to make a big statement signing by targeting Maddison and Barnes, O’Rourke claimed that signing them would be taking the ‘next step’, adding that the ‘exciting’ duo ‘would really excite the fans’:

“Yeah, I think Newcastle, as you said, there has been a lot of a hype around there following the takeover that they’ll be making some marquee signings.

“There haven’t been many as yet. I think they’ve done some good business so far in January, which helped secure the club’s Premier League survival, but they’re probably looking to take that next step now and moving for exciting players like Maddison and Harvey Barnes is something that would really excite the fans.”

The Verdict: Real coup

It would certainly be a real coup from the Tynesiders if they can land even just one of Maddison or Barnes.

Should Newcastle sign Barnes?

Yes

Yes

No

No

They managed an impressive 18 goals and 18 assists between them combined in the Premier League last season (WhoScored), and are proven in the top flight.

The pair will also be keen to break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and a move to a big club in the Magpies, where they should be playing week in and week out, could really elevate their chances of making it.
