Newcastle United: Magpies ‘definitely’ now ‘keeping an eye on’ James Maddison -Newcastle United News

Transfer insider Dean Jones has shared that Newcastle United are ‘definitely’ now ‘keeping an eye on’ James Maddison ahead of the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Two bids rejected

The St James’ Park outfit reportedly had two bids rejected by Leicester City for Maddison in the summer, the second worth a total £50m.

The Foxes value him at £60m, so the Tyneside club could come back in for him in January if they can stump up an additional £10m.

The Latest: Keeping an eye on him

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has shared that Maddison’s situation at the King Power Stadium is something that Newcastle will ‘definitely be keeping an eye on’, although he admits that it is ‘hard to imagine’ Leicester  letting him depart midway through the season.

The journalist said: “They’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it, but Leicester’s situation will determine whether he becomes available.

“It’s hard to imagine that they’re going to let anyone leave halfway through a season when they’re fighting for their Premier League status. They’ve already had players ripped out and they’re struggling to bounce back from that.”

The Verdict: Pay the money

All players at Leicester have their price, as Chelsea found out when they finally convinced the Midlands club to sell them Wesley Fofana, so if the Tynesiders can cough up £60m for Maddison in January, the Foxes may be inclined to sell.

The 25-year-old already has two goals and one assist in the Premier League (WhoScored) so far this season despite Leicester’s poor start, and he looks determined to break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Should Newcastle sign Maddison?

At the moment, the Foxes do not look like they will be able to fulfil his ambitions, so a move to the ambitious Magpies may help Maddison’s career in the long run.

This potential deal is certainly one to watch until January comes.
