Newcastle United have been told Mason Mount would be an 'absolutely perfect' signing by former player Stan Collymore.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eyeing midfielder

Newcastle have been linked to multiple midfielders in recent weeks, with Conor Gallagher named as a potential target at the end of the January transfer window, however he ended up staying at Chelsea.

In the past few days, Scott McTominay and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been detailed as 'serious targets', while Adrien Rabiot is said to be another option, and so it is clear Eddie Howe wants to upgrade that area of the pitch after losing Jonjo Shelvey without a direct replacement.

The Latest: Collymore reacts

Speaking to CaughtOffside about Mount's ongoing contract discussions with Chelsea, Collymore claimed that Howe should move for the midfielder, should he decide to leave.

The pundit said: “If the lad is seriously considering his future, a switch to Newcastle would be absolutely perfect for him. I wonder if Howe and the Magpies’ hierarchy feels the same way.

“Mount is not only the type of energetic player who would fit the Geordies’ system brilliantly, but he’s also an English Champions League winner who hasn’t yet his prime so he’d be a huge signing and would send a major signal of intent.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

Hailed as 'world class' by pundit Dean Saunders, the Englishman is a proven player at both Premier League and international level, having made 127 top-flight appearances for the Blues, and 36 caps for his country.

As such, the 24-year-old has the pedigree required to help take Newcastle to the next level, while his age is also another bonus, given that he is still yet to come into his prime.

The Cobham academy graduate reached double figures for both goals and assists in the previous Premier League campaign, and this season he has once again proven himself in the Champions League, weighing in with four assists.

Recent reports have indicated that Mount's contract talks with Chelsea are close to collapse, presenting the Magpies with a fantastic opportunity to sign a player who would help transform them into real title contenders.
