Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he almost joined Newcastle United when the late Sir Bobby Robson was managing them.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Portuguese coach admitted that he has a soft spot for the Tyneside club, calling himself a “little Magpie”.
His soft spot is due to his close friend and mentor Robson, with whom he worked alongside for FC Barcelona in the 1996/97 term. When asked whether he almost joined him as his assistant at St. James’ Park, Mourinho admitted: “More or less, yes.”
Indeed, Robson’s record as manager in the northeast was not a bad one at all, as his teams managed to win a total of 112 games out of 245, scoring 393 goals in the process, according to Transfermarkt, and Newcastle reached the second group phase of the Champions League under him in 2002/03.
Whether Mourinho would have been able to help improve the Magpies under Robson is another question, but his own record since stepping up from being an assistant is formidable
The 57-year old has won no fewer than three Premier League titles while managing Chelsea, as well as winning the Champions League on two separate occasions with FC Porto and Inter Milan. He has also won several other domestic and European trophies with the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid, as per Transfermarkt.
Perhaps it is surprising that a manager of Mourinho’s calibre and CV almost joined Newcastle, and who knows what may have escalated if he did indeed link up with his old friend in Robson.

Nonetheless, it is clear to see that he is still fond of Robson to this day, as are many fans of the Tyneside club.
