Alan Shearer has dropped a claim on Mike Ashley while speaking about Newcastle United to Premier League Productions (via The Chronicle).
The St. James’ Park legend claimed that the current owner of the Tyneside club is ‘only bothered about one thing’ and that is to keep Steve Bruce’s team in the top flight.
Should Newcastle fans be grateful for the money that Ashley has put into the club?
He went on to describe the Magpies’ display in their 2-0 away loss at Chelsea on Monday night as ‘poor’ and ‘weak’ in what was a passionate take on his former side.
He said: “The owner at Newcastle is only bothered about one thing and that’s keeping Newcastle United in the Premier League. They’re not bothered if they finish fourth bottom or fifth bottom so long as they stay in the Premier League so I don’t see them panicking as yet.
“That is a tough game Fulham have at Burnley away in their next game, but I thought Newcastle’s performance was poor. I thought it was weak. They were never really in the game at all and, from a Chelsea point of view, it was just a matter of how many they were going to get and they saw the game out.”
Should Newcastle be more ambitious?
With Shearer’s claim that Ashley is only bothered as to whether the North East club stay in the division, NUFC fans cannot help but feel that they should be more ambitious.
They sit dangerously close to the relegation zone in 17th spot at the moment on 25 points, just seven above 18th-placed Fulham who also have a game in hand on them (BBC Sport).
However, with the likes of Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser added in the summer transfer window, along with players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron, Newcastle should be aiming for more than another relegation scrap.
A takeover at St. James’ Park cannot come soon enough, and perhaps then they would show more ambition than Ashley.
