Newcastle: Brazilian outlet makes Angelo claim -Newcastle United News

Newcastle United are interested in signing Santos wonderkid Angelo this summer, according to a report from Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte.

The lowdown: Samba starlet

Born in the capital Brasilia, Angelo has been nurtured as part of the Santos youth system and has now become an established member of the senior ranks having become the youngest goal scorer in CONMEBOL Libertadores history.

Still just 17 years old, the exciting winger has already amassed 74 first-team appearances for the Brazilian top-flight outfit and was handed the mythical number 11 shirt once worn by Paris Saint-German and Brazil superstar Neymar Jr.

Despite there already being a transfer agreement in place between Barcelona and Santos, sparking links suggesting Angelo could be making a move to the Camp Nou, Newcastle have now seemingly entered the fray…

The latest: Magpies ‘willing’

As per Globo Esporte, Newcastle are believed to be ‘willing to pay’ €20million (£17million) to sign Angelo.

It’s claimed that Steve Nickson, the head of recruitment in the North East, ‘travelled’ to the South American nation to watch the six-cap Brazil Under 16 sensation in action against Flamengo – a game which saw fellow Toon-linked compatriot Gabriel Barbosa net the match-winner.

The report also states that there has ‘been no official proposal’ for the teenager described as a ‘top talent’ by reputable football talent scout Jacek Kulig, but Santos are unlikely to accept the mooted offer.

Newcastle fans! Do you remember who scored your first league goal of the 21/22 season?

The verdict: Tantalising option

Although such an arrival would take time to make an impact on Eddie Howe’s plans, signing a highly-rated Brazilian prodigy ahead of Barcelona and reported interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool would be a huge marker from PIF and indeed go some way to signifying the start of the new era at SJP.

During the ongoing 2021/22 campaign, Angelo has scored once and provided three assists in 23 appearances across all competitions, earning a 7.04 Sofascore rating whilst completing a phenomenal 4.0 dribbles, winning 5.9 duels and making 1.3 key passes on average per game.

Valued at £9million and under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), any move for the balletic Brazilian would need to be a substantial one to satisfy Santos and given the remarkable performance levels already achieved, Dan Ashworth and Howe should be pushing to get this deal moving forwards.
