Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy insists that Dwight Gayle failed to make an impact when he was given a chance in the first-team last season.
The striker has struggled to score goals during his time in the first-team in the Premier League.
Should Newcastle let Gayle leave St James' Park?
Last season, Gayle played 18 times in the Premier League, although just four of those were starts.
He scored just once, in the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion, and Kennedy does not think he showed anything like the ability needed to be a Premier League striker.
Gayle has also struggled with injuries, of course, as he missed the first 10 games of the campaign with a ligament injury.
He said: “He kicked up a fuss last season Gayle about not getting in the team when Newcastle weren’t playing well and Wilson wasn’t scoring goals and then when he got the opportunity when Wilson was out, he really didn’t grasp it.
“He looked dreadfully short of the level of quality that you need to be.”
