Newcastle United have held ‘preliminary talks’ with Christian Eriksen over a move to St James’ Park this summer, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Lowdown: Free agent

After signing a short-term deal with Premier League club Brentford in January, the 30-year-old is soon to be a free agent, with his contract expiring at the end of this month.

A whole host of top-flight suitors have been named as competitors in the race to secure the Dane’s signature, the most prevalent of which have been Tottenham and Manchester United, with an extension to his stay with Brentford also a realistic possibility.

Transfer insider Dean Jones previously reported that it was the former Inter Milan player’s preference to remain in London, but this could always change with the lure of numerous northern giants.

The Latest: Talbot’s claim on Eriksen

Talbot, who writes for publications such as The Times, The Mirror and The Guardian, has shared the latest on Eriksen’s next career move, revealing that the midfielder has spoken to Newcastle over a potential move this summer.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed: “They have met. I was told they met on Monday – some preliminary talks – but I think he’s been sort of meeting at various clubs, to be honest, so it doesn’t really count for much. He’s sort of been talking to a number of clubs.”

The Verdict: Great signing

Hailed by Brentford manager Thomas Frank as a “top player” and “an unbelievable character” who “brings quality and calmness to the team”, it is easy to see why so many clubs are in for the Denmark international.

The attacking midfielder has amassed 236 appearances in the Premier League, having contributed 52 goals and 71 assists during his time in the English top flight (via Transfermarkt).

After signing for the Bees, Eriksen proved he still has the ability to perform at the top level, having made ten starts where he played the full 90 minutes and rating as his team's best player for the campaign (via SofaScore). His 7.54 rating also surpassed everyone in Eddie Howe's squad for 2021/22.

Therefore, this would be a brilliant signing for Newcastle if they can lure the Dane away from London.
