Steve Bruce has given a rather worrying update on the future of Newcastle United ace Valentino Lazaro as he admitted in his post-match press conference after the 0-0 draw in the Premier League away at Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium (via The Chronicle) that “it’s been really difficult” with regards to his future.
Should Newcastle sign Lazaro permanently?
Indeed, Lazaro is currently only on loan in the northeast from Inter Milan and is due to return to Italy when the 2019/20 season finishes, as his future at St. James’ Park remains uncertain.
The 24-year old has played in 14 games in all competitions so far for the Tyneside club, scoring two goals and showing his versatility by playing in four different roles, according to Transfermarkt. However, having only played the full 90 minutes in two of these matches, it is perhaps a conundrum as to whether the Magpies should look to sign Lazaro on a permanent deal.
The Austrian international has shown that he can be an asset in the Premier League as he has won 1.7 duels per game in the top flight so far, while also averaging 10.3 accurate passes and winning 0.8 tackles per match, as per Sofascore.
Nevertheless, this may not be enough to persuade Bruce or the Newcastle board to sign Lazaro on a permanent basis, unless he can show a bit more in their final match against champions Liverpool.
There is also uncertainty over the proposed takeover of Newcastle and whether this will affect the future of Lazaro, with questions about how much money will be made available to spend in the upcoming summer transfer window and whether Bruce will keep his job for next season.
However, only time will tell as to whether Lazaro carries on wearing the famous black and white stripes beyond next week.
