Talk about the prospective takeover of Newcastle United from the would-be owners has cast doubt over the role of Lee Charnley at St. James’ Park, according to the Daily Mail.
Should Charnley leave Newcastle after the takeover?
As per the report, the Tyneside club’s proposed new Saudi owners will prioritise the appointment of a technical director as part of a boardroom shake-up.
The takeover, backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), who boast the crown prince of the country Mohammed bin Salman as its chairman, and the drive to reshape the Magpies’ hierarchical structure will place uncertainty over the future of current managing director Charnley.
If the transaction to buy the club is completed, the new owners are then expected to launch a mega money transfer drive of Europe’s most high-profile players.
However, sources from the Daily Mail claim that, whilst there will be significant funds available, the Saudis will take a more measured approach to their recruitment and want a technical director with a reputation of working within a budget and framework, particularly as football comes to terms with the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Bundesliga club Fortuna Dusseldorf’s current sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel is understood to be among the candidates under consideration for the position, as well as former FC Porto and Paris Saint-Germain supremo Antero Henrique.
However, the mooted £300m bid remains in the balance as the Premier League investigate a myriad of issues linked to the Saudi buy-out. Calls for the takeover to be blocked amid allegations of illegal piracy and copyright infringements, as well as human rights issues, are being taken seriously by the top flight.
Nevertheless, there remains a confidence that a deal to take control of the club from Mike Ashley will be ratified once league officials complete their investigations.
