Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has suffered an extension to his period on the sidelines with another injury setback, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Lowdown: Isak’s initial injury

The 23-year-old has been absent for the Magpies’ last three Premier League fixtures with a hamstring injury.

This includes his omission for the side’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, where Eddie Howe could’ve used the Sweden international’s unique attacking profile to hit the hosts on the counter-attack like he did to Liverpool at Anfield.

And having already missed half of all the games played since his arrival at St James’ Park this summer, it now appears Isak is set to for an even longer period out on the sidelines.

The Latest: Downie’s news

Downie has shared a fresh update on Isak’s injury, revealing a major blow in the Magpies’ squad selection for the next month.

Taking to Twitter, the Sky Sports reporter revealed:

“Big blow for Newcastle that Alexander Isak won’t play again until after the World Cup. Frustrating start for the Swede who’s only played three games since record-breaking arrival. Allan Saint-Maximin also misses visit of Everton tomorrow with hamstring set-back."

The Verdict: Bad to worse

In spite of his strong goalscoring record in a black and white shirt, Callum Wilson’s regular injury woes render the Swede’s absence all the more worrying for Howe, especially with the loss of Allan Saint-Maximin as well.

Having made just three appearances for the Tyneside outfit, the former Real Sociedad striker has already scored two goals for the club, illustrating his prolific finishing rate in the final third.

Holding a stylistic likeness to huge names like Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku, we are still awaiting to experience the full extent of Isak’s ability at St James’ Park.

News of his long-term absence will come as a major frustration to Toon fans, who will now worry whether Wilson can get them through to the international break as Howe's attacking ranks look dangerously thin.
