Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed an injury concern regarding Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of the Magpies' Carabao Cup clash against Bournemouth

The Lowdown: Newcastle back in action

The Toon have their first competitive game tomorrow following the recent World Cup tournament in Qatar, which saw Argentina beat France on penalties.

Before the Premier League campaign resumes, the Tyneside club will be taking on Bournemouth in the fourth-round stage of the Carabao Cup.

After seeing his side beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 at St. James' Park a few days ago, the Newcastle boss had an update to share regarding the fitness of one of his players.

The Latest: Howe's injury update

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of Tuesday's showdown against the Cherries, Howe had this to say about Saint-Maximin:

"I think there's a slight injury but we'll see today how he comes in. After a game things can be sore but they can settle quickly so hopefully that's the case."

The Verdict: Concerning...

Having scored one goal and provided three assists in seven Premier League appearances this season, the Frenchman is undoubtedly a useful attacking figure for the Magpies.

Specifically, the 25-year-old has the highest rate of goal-creating actions per 90 minutes (1.43) at the club as well as the second-highest rate of shots on target per 90 minutes (1.19).

At the halfway point of the win against Vallecano, Newcastle journalist Chris Waugh highlighted how "effective" Saint-Maximin was down the flank for his side.

Taking all of this into account, it would be safe to assume that Howe would have been hoping to deploy the winger against the south coast club on Tuesday, but he absolutely cannot take any risks.

The Frenchman has often struggled to shake off muscle injuries and soreness in the past, so the fact he is already feeling the effects of just one warm-up match is a big concern.
