Newcastle United will be given the ‘opportunity to strengthen’ their squad in January, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Smart business

The Premier League side welcomed PIF as their new owners just over 12 months ago, but instead of going out and signing several household names as maybe expected, they have been shrewd with their additions in bringing in the likes of Nick Pope and Dan Burn.

Alexander Isak has really been the standout marquee addition after joining for a club-record fee, but as a result of currently sitting third in the table, the winter market could prove to be a lot more interesting than first imagined.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones shared that Newcastle will have signing new players at the top of their wishlist in the New Year. He said:

“They don’t want to stand still. So, you’d imagine that being in this position they’ve put themselves in, they’ll see it as an opportunity to strengthen further and it will feel like less of a gamble now to put a bit more money into the club than it might have done six months ago.”

The Verdict: Wait for the summer

The Magpies are undoubtedly in a higher position than they probably would have expected at this point in the season, but they should wait until next summer before making multiple big investments.

Securing a place in the Champions League comes with a huge financial reward, but with so many games still left to play, anything could change between now and the end of the season.

January is the perfect opportunity to make a few smaller, cheaper additions in case any injuries occur, but in terms of box-office targets, sealing them at the end of the term would be a lot less of a risk.
