Newcastle United: Fabian Schar poor vs West Ham United

Newcastle United: Fabian Schar poor vs West Ham United - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar was dubbed “sloppy” by Jordan Cronin in the Magpies’ 1-1 draw this weekend.

The Lowdown: Points shared

Newcastle were forced to settle for a point as David Moyes’ West Ham United side earned a deserved draw as they battle bravely against opposition with over double the amount of points as themselves in the Premier League.

The Magpies opened the scoring via Callum Wilson just minutes after they thought they’d taken the lead through Joe Willock, only for VAR to conclude the ball had previously gone out of play in the build-up.

Lucas Paqueta levelled just after the half-hour mark and the Hammers were able to hold out for the remainder of the game, while despite dominating possession with 62.7%, Newcastle mustered up two fewer shots than the visitors (via Sky Sports) and ultimately weren’t creative or ruthless enough.

The Latest: Player ratings

At full-time, Jordan Cronin posted his player ratings for Newcastle World, with Willock, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin receiving a 5/10 rating – the lowest of the starters – but it was centre-back Fabian Schar’s 6/10 performance that caught the eye for the wrong reasons.

Cronin wrote: “Uncharacteristically sloppy in possession. Produced a vital interception and came close to putting United in front, both in the first half.”

Toon fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 2022 calendar year?

The Verdict: Underperformed

Schar has been one of Newcastle’s best players consistently this season, with his average rating of 7.18 the fourth-highest in the Magpies squad (via WhoScored), having played 20 out of 21 league games so far.

But Saturday night’s clash was one to forget for the 31-year-old, who only mustered a 72% pass accuracy and a 50% long pass success, as well as losing possession 21 times (via Sofascore).

His defensive work was also not up to scratch, with him winning just one ground duel from four attempted, being one of the main Magpies players who suffered an off-day as they failed to climb back above Manchester United into third.
