Newcastle United stars Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are now close to making a return from injury, reports ChronicleLive journalist Ciaran Kelly.

The Lowdown: Magpies’ injuries

Back on Monday, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope reported that the Brazil international was likely to miss the Magpies’ ‘next two matches at least’. He revealed that the 24-year-old’s knock was possibly picked up against Manchester City but not detected until after their EFL Cup clash against Tranmere Rovers.

Just a day later, Hope shared another injury blow for the Tyneside outfit, revealing that the French winger was a doubt for the Toon’s Premier League tie against Liverpool with a hamstring concern.

The Latest: Injury update

Following transfer deadline day and with Newcastle’s upcoming fixture against Crystal Palace, Kelly has shared an injury update regarding the duo from Eddie Howe's pre-match press conference.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist said:

“Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are 'close' to returning for #nufc but not clear yet if they will be back for Crystal Palace tomorrow. Callum Wilson slightly behind them.”

The Verdict: Huge boost

Since his arrival at St James’ Park, Guimaraes has established himself as a crucial mainstay in Howe’s midfield. The Brazilian has netted five goals in 21 appearances for the club and was ranked as Newcastle’s second-best player statistically for the 2021/22 top-flight campaign, coming in behind Kieran Trippier.

Saint-Maximin has also enjoyed a fantastic start to the new Premier League season, having scored once and assisted twice in the Magpies’ four opening games. So far, the Frenchman has averaged an incredible 7.53 match rating on SofaScore – the highest by some margin out of the entire Newcastle squad.

Therefore, whilst their possible absences for the Palace match will come as a slight blow for Howe, their quick return from injury will allow the Toon to reunite their best XI in next to no time, with a push for European football most definitely on at this stage in the campaign.
