Newcastle United are interested in a move for Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes, according to journalist and transfer expert Rudy Galetti.

The Lowdown: £54m release clause

The Premier League outfit find themselves third after an outstanding start to the season, and Eddie Howe will no doubt be looking to bolster his ranks this month to continue his side’s impressive form.

Gomes’ contract at the Maracana Stadium isn’t set to expire until 2027 but does have a £54m release clause included, which PIF could potentially trigger should they want to secure the services of their target.

The Latest: Newcastle eyeing Gomes

Taking to Twitter, Galetti revealed that the Magpies are currently monitoring Gomes, who is one of several candidates being discussed at St. James’ Park. He tweeted:

“#Newcastle would like to strengthen - if possible as early as January - the midfield (and the attack as well).

“Among the names followed by #NUFC, there is also Joao Gomes, #Flamengo midfielder.”

The Verdict: No-brainer

Gomes is only 21 years of age so £54m is a hefty sum to cash out, but having been dubbed a ‘midfield destroyer’ by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, this is a no-brainer of a deal to complete.

The Rio de Janeiro native is a defence-minded player and currently averages 3.2 tackles per league game, alongside offering versatility with the ability to operate in five different positions.

Newcastle need to make signings that will help them nail down a top-four place at the end of the campaign, and Gomes has all the perfect attributes to come in and do just that.
