Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe wants to see goalkeeper Loris Karius sign a contract extension at St. James’ Park.
The Lowdown: Newcastle’s move for Karius
Back in September, Newcastle signed Karius as a free agent on a short-term deal until January.
Having not made an appearance for the Toon in the Premier League or the Carabao Cup, the 29-year-old made his debut for the Magpies in their recent 5-0 friendly win against Al Hilal on Thursday evening.
Despite only making one appearance for the Tyneside club, the shot-stopper has reportedly convinced Eddie Howe that he deserves to continue his journey with the Toon.
The Latest: Howe wants Karius contract extension
The report also adds that the goalkeeper “has impressed club staff with his conduct behind the scenes and performances in training.”
The Verdict: A smart move for Newcastle
Despite it being a mid-season friendly, Karius will undoubtedly be pleased that he managed to keep a clean sheet in his first appearance for Newcastle.
With the report highlighting how impressed the coaching staff have been with the German’s behaviour and conduct, we feel that this is a valid enough reason to offer the goalkeeper a new deal.
Even though Howe has four senior goalkeepers at his disposal, having the 29-year-old in the squad, who has 29 Premier League appearances under his belt, will give the Toon a good option to call upon if needed at any point throughout the remainder of the season.
Taking all of this into account, we believe that if Newcastle are able to extend Karius’ contract in January, this would be a fairly low-key but ultimately smart move from them, especially if he’s able to show what he’s capable of in a domestic game.
