Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough confirmed that the left-back is set to miss out on his nations’ game against Norway this evening in the UEFA Nations League. The 22-year-old has a problem with his Achilles which means he will not be risked.
Defender set for scan but injury not too serious
Lewis played the entire 120 minutes of Northern Ireland’s European Championship qualifying play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, with the 22-year-old helping his country secure a penalty shootout win to take them into the final play-offs for a place at next year’s re-arranged tournament.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side’s meeting with Norway, Baraclough said that the injury to Lewis requires a scan to assess the full extent of the problem. However, he also suggested that he is not expecting the injury to be serious and that he could still feature for Newcastle this weekend.
He said: “He’s gone to have a scan on his ongoing Achilles niggle, but it’s nothing to worry about. It’s improving.
“He mightn’t be able to play the two games so quickly, so it’s something I felt Newcastle had in mind for the player anyway.”
That means that the 22-year-old could well still be in the squad for the Magpies as they begin a tough set of fixtures starting with the clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Lewis injury scare highlights his importance already at Newcastle
Lewis has already managed to establish himself as Newcastle’s first-choice left-back since his £15 million move from Norwich, and the defender has already made a positive impression winning 2.5 duels per game and maintaining a 76% passing accuracy so far this term, as per Sofascore.
The 22-year-old has been described by his former manager, Daniel Farke, as ‘top class,’ and the full-back will be a vital player for the Magpies throughout the campaign. Newcastle have already endured problems with injuries to defenders so far this term, so Lewis’ issue not being serious should be a major boost for fans of The Toon.
