Newcastle United will once again dip back into the transfer market in January with the Magpies having the funds available to add to their squad in the winter window.
In the summer window, Steve Bruce’s side brought in both Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis from Bournemouth and Norwich City respectively for a combined £35 million, whilst the likes of Jeff Hendrick, Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie were added to the first-team squad on free transfers.
Last January, the Magpies were forced to keep their funds in reserve in preparation for the summer, amid the talk of a potential takeover of the club. However, it is now understood that Bruce will be backed once again when the January transfer window opens, according to Chronicle Live.
Wilson, in particular, has already started to deliver on the investment the Magpies put in for him. The forward has already found the net on four occasions in his first four Premier League matches. While Lewis has shown fleeting moments of his potential during his four league appearances.
The Magpies did not add to their first-team squad on the last day of the summer window, despite some suggestions that they could dip into the loan market. Bruce will now have to work with the squad he has until the New Year, unless he sees a Championship player or two that catch his eye.
The summer window was a largely positive one for the Magpies and the squad has certainly been strengthened from where it was at the end of last term. The lack of a goal scorer upfront was apparent throughout the previous season with marque signing Joelinton only scoring twice and missing eight big chances (via Sofascore).
Therefore, the arrival of Wilson, who has already doubled Joelinton’s tally from last year, is a major improvement for them. While all of Hendrick, Fraser and Lewis are very solid singings which boost the quality and depth of the squad. The hope will be that more arrivals of that quality are made in January.
