Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, according to 90min (via NUFC360).

The Lowdown: Depay’s position at Barca

The 28-year-old has fallen way down the pecking order at the La Liga giants this summer after the club secured the signings of Raphinha from Leeds United and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

With less than a year left on his current contract, the Netherlands international is said to be available this summer, with Barcelona having already offered the 28-year-old’s services to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Latest: Newcastle linked with Depay

According to a report by 90min (via NUFC360), Depay has been offered to Newcastle this summer.

Sport recently stated that the Catalan club were holding out for a £17m fee for the attacker.

However, as per 90min’s report, Eddie Howe has concerns over the player’s suitability for his system at St James' Park.

The Verdict: Sounds great but seems unlikely

When looking at Depay’s underlying statistics, the prospect of his arrival on Tyneside appears to be an exciting one, given the playmaker’s highly desirable qualities.

Compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 28-year-old ranks in the 99th percentile for passes, the 97th percentile for progressive carries and progressive passes received, and the 94th percentile for shot-creating actions (via FBRef).

When scouring the market for attackers, you won’t come across many players with better figures than the ‘phenomenal’ 80-cap Netherlands international, who has been described as 'one of the best' by team-mate Riqui Puig.

However, if Howe isn’t fully convinced, there must be good reason for not being sold on Depay, making this an unlikely signing this summer.
