A petition for the Premier League to make a final decision on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United has been made by a fan to try and put some more pressure on the top flight.
Loads of members of the Toon faithful have been rather patient up until now as they await an official announcement from England’s highest division, but this saga has been going on since March, and now there have been plenty of calls for the league to give the fans more clarity on the whole situation.
Will the takeover of Newcastle be approved?
Since the prospective £300 million deal between Mike Ashley, who still remains the current owner of the Tyneside club, and Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-led group was agreed, there have been lots of conflicts as to whether the bid should be approved or not.
On the buying side is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) and his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), who has caused a lot of controversy for a number of reasons alone.
Hatice Cengiz, the fiancee of the late journalist Jamaal Khashoggi, has accused him of being involved in his murder and has written several letters to the top flight and to members of the Toon faithful to plead for the bid to be blocked.
She claims that MbS would not pass the Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) set out by England’s highest division as he would not be deemed to be fit and proper, but ultimately this final decision lies with the league.
Whether the petition is taken notice of by the Premier League is another question, but it has received thousands of signatures so far, and thus may put pressure on them to announce their verdict sooner rather than later.
Geordies, will you be signing the petition? Comment below!
