Newcastle: Liam Kennedy left unimpressed by Kieran Trippier's performance - Newcastle United News

Liam Kennedy has been speaking about Kieran Trippier’s latest mistake for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle battle hard for three points

Newcastle managed to record just their second Premier League win of 2023 on Sunday night as they won 2-1 at home to Wolves despite falling behind rather late in the second half.

The Magpies stormed into a first-half lead thanks to Alexander Isak’s fourth league goal of the season, but they were pegged back by second-half substitute Hwang Hee-chan who pounced on Trippier’s costly mistake.

Trippier was indeed at fault for the second goal Newcastle conceded away to Manchester City in their previous fixture when he gave the ball away, and fate repeated itself on Sunday when the England international slipped and passed the ball straight to the lively Wolves ace, which counted towards him earning just a 6/10 player rating.

The Latest: Trippier at fault once again

Kennedy was reflecting on Twitter post-match and spoke about Trippier’s moment of madness and how his display was very uncharacteristic of him given how he’s performed since joining last year.

He said: (1:40) “It was feeling when they got that goal – which they were gifted – another error by Kieran Trippier, really uncharacteristic and of course, he set up the first goal for Alexander Isak so we’ll let him off but r really uncharacteristic as he just gifted them an opportunity back into the game.”

The Verdict: Magpies must cut out costly mistakes

For two games in a row now, Newcastle have shot themselves in the foot in terms of handing the opposition easy goals and if they are to be competitive for the top four until the end of the season they have to cut this out.

The Magpies still have the best defence in the Premier League and by some distance, having shipped just 18 goals all campaign, and both Manchester City and Arsenal have the second-best record having conceded 25 times, but Howe’s side have now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last seven games.

This will indeed be a huge worry for Howe as their amazing seasons had been built off a solid defensive unit and if they are to finish in the top four then they’ll have to become a lot more ruthless defensively.
