Newcastle have managed to pick up eight points in the Premier League so far this season. However, despite earning a point in a 1-1 draw at Wolves on Sunday, their performance has been criticised. Bruce confessed after the game in his post-match press conference that given recent injury issues he had set up his side to be resolute and hard to beat first and foremost.
Savage offers another view on Newcastle’s situation
The Magpies have invested heavily into their forward line over recent transfer windows, with Joelinton arriving for a club-record fee and Allan Saint-Maximin joining for £16.5 million in the summer of 2019. Those additions were further boosted by the signings of Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser from Bournemouth this summer.
Newcastle registered more shots on goal than just four other sides in the Premier League last season. While also seeing goalkeeper Martin Dubravka make the most amount of saves in the division (Premierleague.com). There was hope with more attacking additions this summer they could show more attacking intent, but so far they have once again struggled to create.
However, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606, Savage suggested that Bruce is performing well with what he has got and outlined that despite criticism they are still picking up points. While he also argued that the Magpies suffered fewer defeats last term than they had done in Rafa Benitez’s final season.
He said: “Let’s look at some of the facts. They are currently on the same points of Man City, one point ahead of Manchester United.
“Under Bruce they lost 16 games, there were 17 defeats the season before under Rafa. They’re the facts.”
Pressure on Bruce will not subside unless changes are made
Despite Savage’s defence of Bruce it is clear that a lot of Newcastle supporters are growing tired of the negative approach to games. The Magpies boss did try to point out he has tried to open the side up more at times this campaign, but that is not really backed up in terms of their attacking numbers.
Newcastle have plenty of players with ability to create chances, but Bruce appears to be reluctant to allow them the freedom to express themselves in the final third. Until that changes, the Magpies boss will continue to be heavily questioned by fans and it does seem like a relationship that is starting to strain beyond repair.
