Steve Bruce has dropped some positive Newcastle United team news ahead of their game away at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday night.
Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against Dean Smith’s team, the former Villa boss said (via @NUFC): “The good news for everybody is that Saint-Maximin is in the squad. He’s trained well all week and his fitness levels are very, very good. We have to get the balance right and I wouldn’t expect him to be starting but he’ll be in the squad.”
Saint-Maximin return a big boost for Newcastle
The return of Allan Saint-Maximin, even if it is just a small cameo off of the bench, will be a big boost for the St. James’ Park faithful as they look to end their rotten form against AVFC.
Would Saint-Maximin leave if the Newcastle takeover is not completed?
The 23-year-old has missed the last 11 matches in total over all competitions for the Tyneside club, and within those games the Magpies have been knocked out of both the Carabao and the FA Cup and have only won two of the last nine matches in the Premier League, drawing two and losing the other five (Transfermarkt).
The France international was winning no fewer than 7.6 of his duels a game in the top flight in the 2020/21 term before his absence, whilst also averaging 3.6 successful dribbles per appearance (Sofascore).
His dribbling ability allows NUFC to get higher up the pitch, which has been greatly missed in recent games as they sit on the lowest average possession in the division (37.8%).
