Newcastle United in the mix to sign Theo Sander

Newcastle United in the mix to sign Theo Sander -Newcastle United News

Newcastle United are in the mix to land a transfer deal for teenage goalkeeper Theo Sander.

The Lowdown: Sander’s career so far

At the age of 17, Sander has made 57 appearances for Aalborg BK across their youth and senior sides.

With those appearances under his belt, the youngster has only been able to keep 12 clean sheets and has conceded 117 goals in total.

Despite his young age and seemingly unimpressive record however, the Danish shot-stopper has caught the attention of numerous Premier League clubs.

The Latest: Newcastle interested in Sander

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle are one of the clubs, alongside fellow Premier League sides such as Arsenal, Aston Villa and Brentford, interested in signing the shot-stopper.

The report specifies that Arsenal are making regular checks on the player, Brentford manager Thomas Frank is following Sander closely and that Villa and Newcastle’s scouts have been alerted to the goalkeeper.

The Verdict: Surprising

In addition to the significant number of goals that he’s conceded throughout the early stages of his career, Sander’s seven senior league appearances this season have not done much to convince us that he’d be a worthy signing for Newcastle.

For example, with 30 shots faced across those seven appearances, Sander has only saved 18 of them, leaving him with a lower save percentage (60%) than his fellow Aalborg goalkeeper Josip Posavec (68.9%).

Newcastle fans! Do you know how many Magpies players in total have been called up by their countries for World Cups?

Taking this into account, even though he’s still very young, it’s hard to see what Newcastle and their Premier League colleagues see in the goalkeeper, who seemingly needs to work on his shot-stopping abilities before we even entertain the other aspects of being a top ‘keeper in modern football.

However, with Newcastle’s four current goalkeepers being around the age of 30, this could be why they may be on the lookout to sign a young shot-stopper like Sander.

The Tyneside club have a big question on their hands over whether the Aalborg youngster would be worth getting into a potential transfer battle for.
