Newcastle United are reportedly now one of two teams 'most interested' in signing Marco Asensio.

The Lowdown: Attackers wanted

After signing Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett, Eddie Howe now seems to be focusing on the attacking third of the pitch in order to further strengthen his squad.

A number of wingers from the Premier League have been linked with a move to St. James' Park, while the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja are also thought to be targets, confirming rumours that a new striker is wanted as well.

The Latest: Asensio interest

As per AS (via Sport Witness), the Magpies and AC Milan are the two clubs 'most interested' in signing Asensio, who only has one year left on his contract at Real Madrid.

Los Blancos seem willing to let him go, but the winger's high wages could prove to be an 'obstacle'.

The Verdict: Worth a punt?

Asensio has not enjoyed the best of times at Madrid, largely being a bit-part player at the Bernabeu, while he has never reached double figures for assists in a La Liga campaign, and his highest goal tally for a single season is ten from last term (Transfermarkt).

Hailed as ‘spectacular‘ by his former agent Horacio Gaggioli though, and a player with ‘a rock in his boot‘ by Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti for how much power he can generate when striking a ball, Asensio has certainly showed signs of the promising Spanish talent that was once likened to superstar Lionel Messi by former Madrid director Jorge Valdano.

Still only 26 years of age, he will certainly feel as if he has a point to prove to reinvigorate his career, and so he could be worth a punt for the Toon Army.
