Newcastle United have reportedly now 'made enquiries' over the possibility of signing Nicolo Zaniolo this summer.

The Lowdown: Gascoigne comparisons

The AS Roma winger has been likened to Magpies legend Paul Gascoigne, as his agent Claudio Vigorelli has claimed that the 22-year-old ‘resembles Gascoigne’ because of his ‘physical qualities’, adding that his technique is ‘devastating’ and he has unique ‘pace and muscle’ for a ‘creative’ player (The Daily Mail).

The 6 foot 3 star has also been dubbed a ‘beast’ by Italian football expert and Serie A journalist Carlo Garganese, and he is sure to gain a lot of interest in the transfer market this summer.

The Latest: Newcastle 'enquiries'

As per Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle have now 'made enquiries' over Zaniolo, but he has no intention of leaving Italy this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been in contact over his potential signing, while both Juventus and AC Milan are thought to be interested in his signature, but they do not have the money to fund a deal at the moment.

The Verdict: Shame

It would be a shame if Newcastle miss out on signing Zaniolo this summer, as seems likely with him reportedly unwilling to leave Italy.

The 22-year-old registered eight goals and a further nine assists in all competitions last season (Transfermarkt), so he could offer Eddie Howe's team another dimension in attack.

Nonetheless, they should not walk away from a deal just yet, and instead work on trying to agree personal terms with the Italy international.
