Santiago Munoz is set to leave Newcastle United at the end of his loan spell this year, with the Magpies not taking up the option to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Lowdown: 18-month deal

The St. James’ Park outfit confirmed on Transfer Deadline Day last year (via their official website) that Munoz had joined their academy on a loan deal for 18 months.

There was also an option to make the deal permanent, as their was hope that he could eventually break into the first-team set-up.

The Latest: Set to leave

As per Record in Mexico (via Sport Witness), Munoz is set to return to Mexican side Santos Laguna at the end of the year, with Eddie Howe's team not taking up the option to sign him permanently.

He famously shares a very similar name to the character Santiago Munez from the film Goal!, who signed for the Tynesiders, and thus the move caused a significant amount of hype because of that connection.

However, Munoz is now set to return to Mexico, with the North East club not taking up the option to buy him and ending any hopes of a Hollywood storyline.

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that Munoz's move to the Toon has not quite worked out as first hoped.

The 20-year-old has played nine times for the U21's, scoring one goal and making one assist (Transfermarkt), but has still not kicked a ball for the senior team.

Given that the takeover happened shortly after he signed, and NUFC have managed to sign the likes of Chris Wood and Alexander Isak among other names, the striker was unlikely to get any first-team football anytime soon, and so now is the best time for both parties to part ways.
