Transfer insider Dean Jones has given his backing to reports that Newcastle United are eyeing a potential move for Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos.

The Lowdown: In talks

It was reported earlier this month that the St James' Park outfit are 'in talks' with Vasco over a move for Santos, and the Brazilian club have put a £20m price tag on him as they believe him to be 'one of the best young players in Brazil'.

Newcastle are thought to be 'confident' that they can strike a deal, although both Manchester City and Juventus have reportedly joined the race for his signature.

The Latest: Santos interest confirmed

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has confirmed reports of interest in Santos, sharing that the Tynesiders are among a number of clubs 'looking at' the young Brazilian.

The journalist said of Newcastle and the 18-year-old: "I think he is one that they're looking at. There are quite a few clubs doing that, though.

"It's the same old situation at Newcastle whereby they have various people with different ideas of the style and type of player that would fit in.

"But, yes, he is one of the names that I've been told they have got an eye on."

The Verdict: Get it done

Having already played 35 senior games for Vasco by the age of 18, scoring seven goals (Transfermarkt), Santos is clearly a serious talent in his home country.

Hailed as a ‘monster’ physically by Brazilian legend Juninho Pernambucano, he has also been likened to one of the greats of the game in Sergio Busquets (Goal), and he would be learning from one of the best in fellow countryman Bruno Guimaraes should he join Eddie Howe's squad.

The Magpies have already signed young Garang Kuol from Australia and Irish defender Alex Murphy, so they appear to be building an exciting new squad of players for the longer-term future.
