The Lowdown: Newcastle interest
As per Football Insider, the St. James’ Park outfit have a ‘concrete’ interest in Pedro, after they had an offer of £30m including add-ons rejected in the summer.
They are thought to be ‘still keen’ on him, and have been ‘closely monitoring’ his progress at the Hornets ahead of a potential fresh approach in the winter window.
The North East club regard Pedro as a ‘top talent’ with the potential to be a ‘Premier League sensation’, so it would not be a surprise to see them make another offer in January.
The Latest: Agbonlahor backs move
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor has claimed that Pedro would be a ‘nice, cute signing’ by the Tynesiders, and would ‘add something different’:
“I think it would be a nice, cute signing.
“They’ve got Callum Wilson, Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron. Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy are decent players too.
“But Joao Pedro would add something different.
“The position that Newcastle are in, it makes sense to strengthen. You’ve got a great chance of making the top four, it makes sense to try and strengthen that team and get them into the top four.”
The Verdict: Get it done
Having failed to sign Pedro in the summer, this is a deal that Eddie Howe’s side should be looking to wrap up in January.
Hailed as a ‘special, special talent‘ by Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews, the 21-year-old has scored six goals and made two assists in the Championship so far this season (Transfermarkt), and has plenty of traits that would frighten defenders in the Premier League.
The fact that he can play anywhere across the front line is an added bonus for Howe, and the Brazilian could be a useful utility player for the Magpies in the second part of the campaign.
