# Newcastle United: Paul Robinson talks up Stoke City’s Joe Allen amid reported Magpies interest

**Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Stoke City’s Joe Allen would be a fine addition to plenty of Premier League teams, following rumours linking the Welshman with a move away from the Championship strugglers.**

[The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/12/17/stoke-city-boss-michael-oneill-ready-offload-clubs-big-earners/) suggests that Allen could be one of several Stoke players, including Jack Butland, that may leave the Bet365 Stadium soon if the Potters’ valuations are met – with Robinson arguing that Allen could be quite the catch for a number of top-flight clubs.

He was asked by [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/an-asset-to-any-team-exclusive-robinson-in-awe-of-29-year-old-amid-reported-newcastle-united-link/) on the possibility of Newcastle United chasing his signature next month, with the former Spurs ‘keeper suggesting he would be a solid signing for plenty of Premier League sides, pointing to his experience at the top level.

He said: “He’s going to be an asset to any team.

“And if Stoke are going to have a clearout, he’s got experience.

“He’s been at Stoke three or four years \[and\] prior to that, Liverpool and Swansea, so he has Premier League experience. He’s still only 29 years old.

“To have a player of that ability, at that age, he’s got a good few years left in him.

“So if he was to become available, I think it may prick the ears of, let’s say a few mid-to-lower Premier League teams.”

While Newcastle are [rumoured](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/joe-allen-stoke-newcastle-wolves-17374963) to be one of a few clubs potentially interested in signing the 29-year-old, a midfielder of Allen’s stature and versatility could be a perfect addition to the Magpies’ squad as they look to steer clear of a relegation battle post-Christmas.

Allen’s ability to cover a [number of roles](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-allen/profil/spieler/51452) in the middle of the park would see him provide useful backup to the Magpies’ resources in multiple fashions, particularly if current knocks to the likes of [Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/steve-bruce-provides-injury-update-newcastle-united-trio-jonjo-shelvey-miguel-almiron-ciaran-clark-1343739) continue into the new year.

And as Robinson highlighted himself, his existing Premier League [experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-allen/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/51452) could bypass the need to adapt to the league’s demands, despite spending the last 18 months in the second tier with Stoke.

So while Newcastle may be striving to [peel away](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table) from the ‘mid-to-lower’ sides in the league, Allen could nevertheless be a handy addition to the squad.
