A journalist has named four players that Newcastle United could be targeting on a free transfer in the summer window.
The Lowdown: Newcastle in free agents market
As per The Chronicle, the Magpies will be in the market for free agents due to the financial impact of the global pandemic.
The proposed takeover at St James’ Park by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group is not guaranteed to go through, with the arbitration case against the Premier League looming, and so Mike Ashley may need to look at some potential bargain deals ahead of the new season.
The Latest: Potential targets
Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Sean McCormick has named four strikers that the Tyneside club could potentially target as free agents in order to give some help to Callum Wilson.
Olivier Giroud and Andre Ayew are familiar names, with the former currently playing for Chelsea while the latter played in the top flight for Swansea City and has enjoyed a good season in the Championship. Siriki Dembele and Vincent Aboubakar could also be targeted by Newcastle over the summer.
Ayew scored 17 goals and supplied a further four assists in 47 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt) and was a key player in guiding them to the play-off final, where the Swans lost out to Brentford.
Giroud could complement Wilson very well given that he is a different type of centre-forward, a target man who can hold the ball up and allow Wilson to make runs in and around him, not to mention that he is now a Champions League winner and has also won the World Cup with France (Transfermarkt).
Should Newcastle sign Giroud?
Dembele has had a great season with Peterborough United in League One, scoring 12 times and supplying a further 12 assists in 45 matches across all competitions (Transfermarkt), helping them gain promotion to the Championship.
Aboubakar has also had a fine season with Besiktas, netting 16 times and producing five assists in 29 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
The Verdict: Giroud the best bet
Of all these options, Giroud would appear to be the Magpies’ best bet if they were to sign a striker on a free transfer. That alone should be encouraging enough, not to mention that he would complement Wilson nicely and also has Premier League experience which both Aboubakar and Dembele lack.
Giroud’s goal record speaks for itself in the English top flight, with a combined total of 90 for both Arsenal and Chelsea in 255 games (Transfermarkt), much more than Ayew’s 21 in 89 matches for both Swansea and West Ham United (Transfermarkt).
The Frenchman, who is currently at Euro 2020 with his country, should be the Toon’s main target if they’re looking to bring in a striker without dipping into their transfer budget.
