Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy insists that the club simply do not have enough depth beyond first-choice striker Callum Wilson.
The Magpies have not been able to secure a new striker thus far in the summer transfer window.
Their only acquisition so far has been the permanent capture of Joe Willock from Arsenal, which was confirmed at the back end of last week.
Do Newcastle need a new striker?
In their squad, Newcastle have Dwight Gayle and Joelinton as back-up to the former Bournemouth striker.
Neither have been prolific for the Magpies in recent seasons – Joelinton scored six goals in 2020/21, while Gayle only scored once.
Kennedy believes that the club need to bring in some more depth before the transfer deadline, or risk being forced to rely on the back-up brigade.
The journalist said: “Beyond that you start scraping the barrel. Dwight Gayle is your Callum Wilson (replacement) when he’s injured and I think that’s the problem.
“It’s not a case of more numbers, they needed an upgrade on Callum Wilson’s deputy and Dwight Gayle has proven that he isn’t that.”
Newcastle are next in action in the Premier League against Aston Villa on Sunday after beginning their season against West Ham United on Sunday.
