Talks regarding Callum Wilson’s future continue to swirl as he remains linked to Newcastle United.
The Bournemouth front-man could be set to leave the newly relegated Cherries as Premier League sides show their interest in his services. As it stands, the Toon, along with West Ham and Spurs are looking to bring Wilson in to improve their options in attack. Kevin Phillips believes St James’ Park would be the ideal destination for him, despite the proposed Saudi takeover having collapsed last week.
Should Newcastle sign Callum Wilson from Bournemouth?
“I know what it is like to play football up in the North East,” the former Black Cat told Football Insider. “Sunderland fans will not thank me for this but I would go to Newcastle if I was Wilson.”
Bournemouth will play out their upcoming season in the Championship following their demotion. Manager Eddie Howe also recently left the club, so a move for the team’s top scorer could be on the cards.
Wilson netted eight Premier League goals this term and has notched a total of 67 goals and 30 assists during his time with the Cherries (via Transfermarkt). Phillips believes that due to the lack of goals Newcastle have managed to score this campaign, the 28-year-old would be made the team’s focal point.
“If he was to go to Newcastle or West Ham he is going to play because Haller and Joelinton have not exactly lit it up,” the pundit continued. “Callum Wilson would have a fantastic chance of playing week in, week out and I would want that if I was moving.”
Midfielder Miguel Almiron finished as the Toon’s highest scorer with eight goals, followed by Jonjo Shelvey with six. Joelinton tailed the pair with four goals to his name – not nearly enough of a return for a striker (via BBC Sport).
Wilson could be looking at a ticket out of the Championship and Newcastle will want to seriously improve their attacking threat. The move should be a no-brainer, especially with the Englishman’s Transfermarkt value currently weighing in at just £18million.
