Michael Brown feels as though the signing of Jeff Hendrick could trigger a domino effect within the Newcastle squad.
The Magpies agreed terms with the former Burnley man, who joins the club as a free agent following his departure from Turf Moor. Hendrick was unable to reach a new agreement with the Clarets and will now represent fellow Premier League side Newcastle this season.
Steve Bruce has expressed his delight over signing the £8.1 million-valued midfielder after reportedly missing out on snapping him up a few years ago.
Would Hendrick start for Newcastle?
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown has lauded the decision to bring Hendrick to St James’ Park. “I think he’s a good addition. He’s got great Premier League experience now,” the former Leeds midfielder said.
Indeed, the 28-year-old has notched a total of 354 senior appearances, with 122 coming from England’s top flight (via Transfermarkt). Hendrick will add a tone of seniority and experience to a relatively young midfield featuring the likes of Matty and Sean Longstaff.
“Steve has a way of playing and a way of getting the best out of players and if he’s bringing him in then he’ll understand where there’s a slot for him,” Brown continued. “You’ve got to look at some of those Newcastle players and think they could be going. Squad wise, you do have to get a couple in.”
Alongside Hendrick, goalkeeper Mark Gillespie is the only other signing the Toon have made this summer. Both arrived at the club as free agents, so there is still money to be spent ahead of the new season.
Three players have left the club on a permanent basis, which could mean more departures are on the cards as Bruce continues to shape and mould his team.
