An Italian journalist has played down a report from Le10 Sport claiming that Allan Saint-Maximin is of interest to Napoli by saying that neither the Newcastle United ace nor his agents have been contacted and that the Serie A club are not following him (Ciro Venerato via NUFC 360).
Would Saint-Maximin leave if the Newcastle takeover is not completed?
As per Le10 Sport, Napoli and Arsenal were the teams said to be the most interested in signing the 23-year old in the upcoming summer transfer window, but it seems as if the former may not be going in for him at all.
This news will likely boost the Toon faithful give just how well he has performed so far in the 2019/20 season.
The Frenchman has scored three goals and supplied four assists in 22 games in all competitions in the Premier League, and has also created eight big chances as well as averaging a rather impressive 4.6 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game, according to Sofascore.
With Napoli seemingly out of the picture for Saint-Maximin at the moment, it looks like Mikel Arteta’s Gunners remain the only club interested in securing his services (via Le10 Sport).
However, this would arguably not be much of a step up for the winger given that the Gunners are only six points ahead of the Magpies in the Premier League table and seem unlikely to get Champions League football with just five matches left to go, an aspiration that may interest the Frenchman if he would like to take the next step up in his career.
Nevertheless, it will be up to the player and the Newcastle board as to where his future lies, but Venerato’s claim could provide a welcome boost to the St. James’ Park outfit.
