Newcastle cool interest in £100m “world-class talent”

Newcastle cool interest in £100m "world-class talent" - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United have been one of the many clubs holding a long-term interest in Southampton star Tyler Dibling, and with the summer transfer window drawing closer, the Tyneside club will be expected to invest in their squad.

The Magpies are currently chasing Champions League qualification after already confirming their spot in the Conference League thanks to their monumental victory in the Carabao Cup.

It has been a fairytale season for the Geordies after they finally ended their 70-year major trophy drought, dominating league-leaders Liverpool at Wembley Stadium last month to take silverware back to the North East.

Newcastle are currently fifth in the Premier League table, and if they can keep that spot, they will upgrade their European experience to compete with the elite for the Champions League trophy next season.

Indeed, the club boasts some of the most talked-about talent in the top flight, with Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali both hot topics of conversation following their outstanding performances in black and white stripes this season.

However, they will need to strengthen in key areas to ensure they have enough depth and quality to give their campaign in Europe its best chance next season.

Dibling has been on the club’s radar for many years, with former sporting director Dan Ashworth trying to poach the youngster from Saints back in 2022, but was unsuccessful in his approach.

Now it is being reported by TEAMtalk that the North East giants are expected to cool their interest in the talented 19-year-old who is being relentlessly chased by Tottenham Hotspur after having a £100m price tag slapped on him.

The publication claims that while Newcastle remain interested in snatching up Dibling’s services this summer, the resurgence of Jacob Murphy in recent months has dampened the desperation for the club to spend so heavily on the right winger role.

Furthermore, the interest in Dibling originated from Ashworth’s pursuit of the youngster a few years ago and the recruitment strategy is likely to have changed with Mitchell behind the wheel now.

Should Newcastle sign Tyler Dibling?

There is no doubt that Dibling is a promising prospect and has proved this season that he has the capability of being a consistent Premier League starter, despite Southampton’s relegation back to the Championship.

The south-coast club will understandably be reluctant to part ways with Dibling as he is their most valuable asset in their pursuit to earn promotion next season, but if a club was committed to spending £100m on the Englishman, they would struggle to pass up the opportunity.

For Newcastle it would be an incredibly large investment and would consume a huge part of their transfer budget in the upcoming window, so it would need to be carefully weighed up as to whether it would be viable for them to commit.

Over 29 Premier League appearances, Dibling – hailed a “world-class talent” by Southampton’s academy manager, Andy Goldie – has scored two goals and created three big chances.

As well as averaging 4.7 duels won, 1.5 successful dribbles and 2.4 ball recoveries per game, demonstrating his potential to become an established Premier League winger with the right development.

While Dibling’s output doesn’t appear to be as impressive compared to his competitors in the league on paper, clubs are clearly willing to pay for his potential with the view of nailing down a future star for a long-term project.

With that being said, it will be an interesting summer for both Dibling and Newcastle in the transfer market, but it seems highly unlikely that the Magpies are in a position to commit to the reported £100m fee that Southampton are demanding.
