According to recent reports, Newcastle United are attempting complete a January move for Brazilian central midfielder Matheus Nunes.
The report by Portuguese publication O Jogo (via Sport Witness) claims that the Magpies have lodged a loan bid, including an obligatory option to buy of £10 million, to Sporting Lisbon for the £2.7 million-rated Nunes.
So far this season, the 22-year-old has featured in 13 Liga Nos fixtures for Ruben Amorim’s side, scoring one goal and providing one assist, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.57 – ranking him as the club’s seventh-worst performer in the Portuguese top flight.
However, despite his rather disappointing form so far this term, it is reported that Sporting have declined Newcastle’s offer for the midfielder, with O Jogo stating that the Liga Nos table-toppers are ‘closing the door to any departure at this stage of the season’.
Would Nunes be a good signing?

Considering the fact that it is reported the Portuguese side are not be open to the idea of parting with Nunes this month, it would appear that if Steve Bruce still wishes to add depth to his options in the centre of the park, he will have to look elsewhere.
And, with the Newcastle boss stating in his press conference on Monday that he has “one or two things bubbling along” in terms of incoming deals, perhaps the closing stages of the window will eventually provide fans with the transfer dealings that have so far been lacking in the current market.
