As many as four clubs from the EFL Championship are chasing Newcastle United ace Jacob Murphy, according to Derbyshire Live.
As per the outlet, Derby County, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City are interested in signing him in the summer transfer window after his rather impressive displays in the league while on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the 2019/20 season.
In 39 games, Murphy scored a total of nine goals and made a further six assists (via Transfermarkt).
He mainly operated from the right-wing, but also played from the left and down the centre, showing his versatility at the Owls (per the website).
Comparing the winger’s stats to the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron in the Premier League in the last campaign, Murphy averaged more crosses and netted more strikes than all of them combined, according to Whoscored.
In fact, he outscored all of his teammates at the Tyneside club with his nine goals, with the next best being Almiron with eight in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.
Yes, there is a difference in quality between the Championship and the top flight, but it is still relatively impressive considering that Murphy mainly operated from the wing.
However, England’s second division may be his level, as he has only managed to play in 41 matches over the course of two terms for the Magpies, scoring just once and providing three assists (via Transfermarkt).
Does Murphy have a future at Newcastle?
Perhaps a move to one of the four sides mentioned would be a decent move for both Murphy and the Toon, providing that a suitable transfer fee can be negotiated.
