Newcastle United: Keith Downie confirms Jeff Hendrick ‘close’ to signing - Newcastle United Transfer Rumours

Keith Downie has confirmed on his official Twitter page that Jeff Hendick is ‘close’ to signing for Newcastle United pending the result of his medical.

Indeed, if the former Burnley ace passes his medical, then he will become a Magpies player in time for the new 2020/21 season.

Hendrick left Sean Dyche’s team back in June after failing to agree a new deal with the Clarets, and so found himself as a free agent.

Steve Bruce has decided to pounce on this, and given that no transfer fee is required for his signature, it may turn out to be a decent bit of business from the Tyneside club.

The central midfield player has a vast amount of experience in the Premier League to his name, having played in a total of 122 games across the last four seasons, scoring nine goals and making a further five assists, according to Transfermarkt.

Hendrick is also a full senior international, having earned 54 caps for the Republic of Ireland since his debut under Italian manager Giovanni Trapattoni back in 2013 at the age of 21, and he has since scored two goals for his country, as per the website.

Let us start with the 10th most expensive, how much was Jonjo Shelvey?

Being at 28 years of age as well, the midfielder is arguably in his prime years and may still a lot to offer the Magpies if his move to St. James’ Park is successful.

Hendrick would be competing with the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park, and so the Irishman could provide some valuable competition in the squad.

Geordies, is Hendrick a good signing for the Toon? Comment below!
